In many ancient cultures the Heron has long been seen as a symbol of self-transformation. It is said to transcend the elements as it sits and sounds forth the primordial cry that turns the wheel of creation at the place where land, water and air meet. As a symbol of grace and beauty this regenerative bird journeys seamlessly through the elements, expanding the conscious awareness of the universe as it traverses the different planes of existence with ease.
Because they are born near water and then mature to fly great distances, the heron is also a symbol of reconstruction and rebirth. Like a lotus flower that sprouts in the mud, grows through the water, and then blooms above the surface, the heron shows us that no matter where we start in life, we all have the potential to transform into something greater. By focusing on who we want to be, whether it’s our physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual selves, we can work towards making that vision a reality.
The Majestic Purple Heron (Garza Real) shows an authentic determination and duty in living with purpose that proves the nobility of its character. With the ability to persevere with a sense of patience and poise, this magnificent creature shows us what is needed to succeed in our daily transformation and renewal.

Ancient Egyptions believed that the heron carried messages between the physical world and the afterlife.
The heron is also associated with the Egyptian avian creator deity, Bennu. The Bennu Bird contributed to the creation of the universe by breaking the primordial silence with its original cry. According to Egyptian legends, Bennu flew over the waters of Nun, which were the waters of total chaos, before landing on a rock. Upon landing on the rock, Bennu let out a primordial cry, which marked the beginning of the end of the chaos.

In Japanese Shintoism the heron symbolism stands for purity, longevity, and peace. It represents our spiritual journey to enlightenment as it sequentially goes through physical death, purgatory, and rebirth from water.
The gentle sound of raindrops falling into shallow pools near their nests is said to be “the voice of God”.
The heron’s ability to walk, fly and swim has led the Japanese to see them as animals that are well-attuned to the Earth’s elements. Such flexibility reminds us how we are capable of adapting to life’s varying situations for it helps strengthen our character and broaden our horizons.

In Slavic mythology, the heron is associated with the mythical half-woman and half-bird creature called Alkonost. According to folktales, Alkonost makes such beautiful sounds that people become bewitched when they hear them.
Alkonost lays her eggs on the beach and then rolls them into the sea. When they hatch, powerful thunderstorms ensue, awakening creation and beauty.
She is the goddess of fertility. If she perches in a tree and brushes dew from her wings onto the branches, she grants healing powers to all fruits on the tree.
